Neighborhood Watch is a program involving the joint efforts of the police and the community, designed to enhance neighborhood security, heighten the community’s power of observation, and to encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors. Neighborhood Watch is not the formation of a neighborhood patrol group. The program is a cooperative effort among citizens and the Medford Police Department. It is important to note that the program is not intended for civilians to stop criminal or suspicious activity. Simply see it, hear it, or suspect it . . . .REPORT IT TO THE POLICE!
The main objective of Neighborhood Watch is to reduce the incidence of crime by:
- Increasing
citizen awareness.
- Encourage
all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies
in reporting crime.
- Developing a neighborhood network to disseminate information.
A Neighborhood Watch Program:
- Creates a greater sense of security, well-being and
reduction in fear of crime.
- Reduces the risk of being a crime victim and tells
criminals that you are not an easy target, that they are
probably being watched.
- Provides greater access to information on criminal
activity.
- Addresses issues of mutual interest by getting
together with your neighbors on a regular basis.
SUCCESS DEPENDS UPON THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION AND COOPERATION OF ALL PERSONS INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM. WHO IS IN A BETTER POSITION TO RECOOGNIZE SOMETHING UNUSUAL THAN THOSE PERSONS WHO ACTUALLY LIVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD?
