KidCare
Missing children have become an increasingly urgent national problem. Although no one has exact numbers, recent Department of Justice estimates suggest that more than one million children are reported missing each year. One thing is certain, however: nothing improves the chances of finding a missing child more than a current, high quality photograph. No other tool is more important in the recovery of a child. In fact, 1 in 7 recoveries are directly linked to the national photo distribution system. Also,, standardized photo identification allows for computerized “age progression” in which the image of a child who has been missing for some time is digitally enhanced to show how the child currently looks.

Polaroid Corporation and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC_ created Project KidCare, a national child safety and standardized photo identification program. The Medford Township Police Officers Association and the Medford Township Police Department have joined with the Medford Township School District to host annual Project KidCare days in each of the Townships 6 elementary schools.

Each year police officers visit the schools and meet with each child in grades kindergarten through 5. Every student is then provided with a KidCare ID and photograph at no cost to the family. The program is fully funded by the Police Officers Association and supported by the Police Department.

A KidCare ID event offers other important benefits, too. It provides a positive social interaction between the children and the police that builds valuable personal ties. KidCare ID events also provide an opportunity for child safety education. Each KidCare Photo ID contains the NCMEC’s seven basic safety tips that can be discussed with children and their parents.
